So, I guess we will have at least one more gay character on network television this fall, in addition to The Class' Sean Maguire. It's Oscar, the paper supply accountant in The Office.
Oscar is played by Oscar Nunez, and Steve Carell unintentionally outed him before the entire office on tonight's episode, Gay Witch Hunt.
Steve Carell's character (Michael, the clueless and prejudiced office manager) continues to make a huge ass out of himself.
Remember that on last season's Diversity Day (watch a clip of that episode here), Steve humiliated Oscar on his Mexican heritage; now he goes after him for his sexual orientation. He says all the wrong things to or about our gay. Steve invites him for beer so that they can talk about how can he (Oscar) do it to another dude, wonders whether Oscar is having a "gay" affair with someone Steve suspects is a lesbian, and is out on a gay witch hunt to out all the gays in the office. Hilarious as usual.
In Gay Witch Hunt, it is clear that being homophobic is idiotic and ignorant.
What an unbelievable season premiere. It could not have been more positive for us gays.
Oh, and in a very awkward demonstration of acceptance, both Steve Carell and Rainn Wilson (the office's eccentric brownnoser paper salesman) kiss Oscar on the lips. That's Steve's crazy way of showing he is, in the end, fine with Oscar being gay. I'll take it.
Check back soon, I will post pictures, video or whatever I can find on tonight's episode.
UPDATE ON SEPTEMBER 22, 2006: here's a video:
