Bug (2007) - LightShed 9

BugI am ambivalent about Bug.  The movie is very well done, the acting is solid across the board, everybody is good in it, especially Ashley Judd -- her performance in Bug brought me memories of Charlize Theron in Monster for some reason (and that was one of the best performances ever).  But the movie itself, the plot, is such a crazy downer.

Bugmichaelshannon

BugashleyjuddharryconnickSo, I can't really recommend the movie.  Basically, Ashley Judd plays a woman who's been through a lot, she gets a nasty visit from her ex-husband who's fresh out of prison (played by a hot Harry Connick Jr.) and she invites this stranger (played by Michael Shannon) to stay with her -- next thing you know, they start seeing bugs everywhere.

We had some interesting gay content.

Bugashleyjuddlynncolins2

Bugashleyjuddlynncolinsmichael Ashley works at a small town lesbian bar for a living, and she is best friends with this super cute lesbian-co-worker (played well by Lynn Collins).  There is quite a bit of info on Lynn adopting a child, and about other lesbians and all.  Ashley kisses Lynn on the lips (a goodbye-type kiss) a couple of times.  All very sweet.  Nasty Harry Connick Jr. curses a few times against our lesbian and Ashley's new guest (Michael Shannon), but Harry is a total loser, so no harm there.  Moreover, our lesbian character seems to be one of the few sane people in the story; so, kudos for the portrayal of us gays!

Half Nelson (2006) - LightShed 9

Halfnelson_1 Ryan Gosling totally deserved his Academy Award nomination for Half Nelson.  But he is not alone in the movie: costar Shareeka Epps is superb.  I can't get over how great her performance was.  100% Oscar worthy.  Halfnelsondirectorryanfleck Great direction too (that's director Ryan Fleck on the right).  You should absolutely see this movie.

In Half Nelson drugs have gotten a tight grip on Ryan Gosling, who plays a school teacher.  His students kinda like him, and Shareeka, also a student, lends a hand.

Halfnelsonshareekaryan

We have very brief, but outstanding gay content.  In one class, a student talks about the assassination of Harvey Milk and how sad it is for a person to die just because of who the person is.  Awesome light for the gays: A kid telling other kids that hating gays is wrong.  Kudos.

Curiosities: a Half Nelson is a wrestling hold and it "is done using only one hand, by passing it under the arm of the opponent and locking the hand at the opponent's neck. Half nelsons are commonly used in amateur wrestling."

Halfnelsonwrestling

More curiosities: head over to fourfour to read Rich's post on Half Nelson (he tries to get Shareeka to laugh, it's hilarious).

Man of the Year (2006) - LightShed 9

Manoftheyear

I just thought I'd publish this review in celebration of the victory of the Democrats in the US.  The victory in both the House and the Senate is a good start for gay issues.  But it's just that, a start.  I don't think that the Democrats are really any better on the gay issues and given the additional state bans on same-sex marriage in many states, I guess that start may actually be more troublesome than previously anticipated.  You can read more about the elections at Towle, and you should read Richard's interesting (but grumpy) take on the election.

Now to our movie.  I was not really expecting much from it, I am not crazy about Robin Williams or Christopher Walken, but Man of the Year surprised me.  It still is just a mediocre movie, but it painted an interesting scenario for an election.

In Man of the Year Robin Williams is a comedian who decides to run for President.  I don't think that scenario is too far from what could actually happen in the near future considering the prestige the likes of Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert enjoy with the public.  And talking about crazy scenarios, how about Arnold being re-elected? How effed up is that?  Really, anything could happen.

Manoftheyearwilliams

Robin Williams plays an independent candidate, alleging both Republicans and Democrats fail to deliver, miserably.  As far as the gay issue is concerned, our fictional candidate could not have been more correct.

PelosiJust on October 22 I saw Nancy Pelosi, now the speaker of the House, on 60 minutes (watch some of the clips here).  In that show Nancy was asked about gay marriage and she just shrugged it off: "Well, that's an issue that is not an issue that we're fighting about here." (you can read about it here).

And she is supposed to come from one of the most liberal constituencies in the US, San Francisco.  I know there is a huge difference between being "only" a coward (to put mildly the stance taken by a lot of Democrats) and being a mean-spirited a-hole advocating the writing of discrimination into a federal constitution, which would make things much harder for us gays for much longer.

Man of the Year had quite a bit of gay content.Manoftheyearlinneywilliams  We had seen a bit of it in the trailer.  In a televised debate Robin's character says something about marriage being always about same sex.

We had a few additional bits of gay content, all pretty positive.  Robin Williams mentions Christopher Walkens' character supports gay marriage, if anything because gays should be as miserable as straight people.  Christopher Walken talks about J. Edgar Hoover being heavy-set but being able to dance well because he was "light in the loafers."  Initially I thought that was a little negative, but that can be seen as criticism to a man who persecuted gays while being gay himself (we never saw that before, that sort of thing just can't happen, right?).  Robin Williams considers a cabinet made up of lesbians, and considers a show about gay farmers.  Kudos!

Quinceanera (2006) - LightShed 9

Quinceanera_2I liked Quinceanera a lot.

In the movie, Emily Rios is a 14 year old who is about to enjoy the party that marks her passage into womanhood, a Quinceanera (think of a 'sweet fifteen' with lots of drama and intense Latin spice).  She finds out she is pregnant and her father, who runs a little church, throws her out of the house.

Quinceaneraemilyrios Emily's nice, nonjudgmental, octogenarian uncle takes her in.  The uncle is played by Chalo Gonzalez.

At Chalo's house, Emily joins Jesse Garcia, who plays her cousin -- he is living Quinceanerachaloemilyjesse there because he was thrown out of his house for being gay.

Quinceanera portrays various generations of Mexican-Americans living the American dream, on a budget.  Immigration is not an issue here.

There was a lot of gay content, but not all positive.

The gay content was brought to us via hottie Jesse Garcia's character, by a yuppie gay couple who rented their back house to Chalo, and by a lesbian couple.

Quinceanerajesse_garciawifebeater

As is the case for most movies with a heavy load of gay content, the discussion of the portrayal of us gays will ruin the plot a bit too much.  So, read on, or go see Quinceanera!

Scrubs - Episode "My New Suit" (2006) - LigthShed 9

Scrubscast

I just saw the new episode of Scrubs.  I had been watching Sons & Daughters instead, but tonight I saw Scrubs (S&D was not on, and I had a renewed interest in Scrubs).  I'm not going into TV but I couldn't resist this episode.

What a nice surprise.  Great gay content.  Well, I was kind of expecting it because the teaser for the episode had the Macho Man song.  Anyway, much more gay content than usual for the show.  Very positive, with stereotypes, but I have no problem with that.

Scrubs_1 In the episode, Zach Braff's loser brother, played by Thomas Cavanagh, makes a surprise visit.  In one scene Thomas asks Donald Faison if he would like to know if his baby is gay if there was a test to take care of that.  In one of those trips to an imaginary land that made Scrubs famous, we see a doctor placing a small radio playing, what else, Village People's Macho Man near Judy Reyes' pregnant belly.  We can see that the fetus is dancing inside Judy's belly, and Donald goes "I'm okay with that!" and Judy agrees all happy.  Super cute.  A gay fetus is huge!

Also, Thomas makes reference to a threesome which almost happened.  It would have been two guys and Sarah Chalke.  That would have been sweet.  Thomas didn't appear to have a problem with that arrangement.  The other guy was hot.  Go Thomas.

Oh, I couldn't resist this picture (not from the episode under gay review here):

Happy Endings (2005) - LightShed 9

Happyendings I loved this movie.  Here, a bunch of stories connects to give us a look at life in general.  Sounds boring and cliche, right?  It is awesome.  We have Maggie Gyllenhaal, Lisa Kudrow, Bobby Cannavale, David Sutcliffe, Tom Arnold, Laura Dern.  Everybody is very good.  Just in case you don't know, the term "happy ending" refers to the ending of a massage with a whore-up special (I guess it can be pretty much anything sexually related).

We have a lot of great gay content.  Jason Ritter is a teenager in the closet, Tom Arnold plays his dad (there's a little bit of an issue there, but nothing big).  Jason has a crush on Steve Coogan.  Ewww pause.  Steve Coogan's boyfriend is played by David Sutcliffe -- yeah, like that would happen in real life.  Double ewww.  Coogan is a toad.  I have been meaning to see Steve Coogan in Tristram Shandy though.  The previews look great.  Oh, and we also have a lesbian couple raising a kid.  Yay!!  Go lesbos!  Chaotic, great plot.  Get out now.  Go rent it!

Nine Lives (2005) - LightShed 9

Ninelives Wow.  Listen carefully.  Start getting ready because by the end of your reading of this review you should be ready to go out and get this movie.  It is that good.  Hands down the best movie I saw this year, and one of the best of all times.  It might hit you like a brick.

The movie tells us the story of nine women, all a wreck.  The scenes all take place in confined places (a supermarket, a small house, etc.), and each lasts about 10 minutes.  Nineliveskathy It's as if Rodrigo Garcia (he wrote the movie), got 9 outstanding movies, squeezed out the very best dialogs -- the dialogs that would be shown at the Oscars -- and concocted the best movie of the year.  The acting is truly, truly superb.  I have never seen a whole cast work so well.  They all deserved Oscars.  Sissy Spacek, Robin Wright Penn, Glenn Close, Kathy Baker, Holly Hunter, the list goes on and on.

Ninelivesrobin

Our gay content is brief but powerful.  One of the nine women, played well by Lisa Gay Hamilton, goes to confront her stepfather, and while waiting for her father to arrive, she chats, very nervously, with her sister.

Nineliveslinda

She asks her sister if she is seeing anyone, boyfriend or girlfriend.  The sister just says she is not seeing anyone and Lisa Gay Hamilton just says you never know how love is gonna show its ugly face.  Very comforting, specially coming out of a girl who is a total train wreck.  Had the sister been gay she would have come out right then.  I guarantee.  You, on the other hand, must be ready to come out right now and get this movie.  I mean buy it.

Kicking and Screaming (2005) - LightShed 9

Kickingandscreaming The movie is pretty bad.  It has a few hilarious moments, but it's bad overall.  Here, Will Ferrell (love him, and he can sort of act too, check out Melinda and Melinda if you don't believe me) is a guy who sucked at sports all his life.  His dad is played by Robert Duvall (hate him), who is a competitive dad.  They coach rival soccer teams.

The gay content is superb.  Our gays here are two lesbian soccer moms, played by Rachel Harris and Laura Kightlinger.  They are not central characters but they appear throughout the movie.  The son of the lesbos gets in no trouble with his little friends for having gay moms.  Great.  The movie did not receive a better score because in one scene this loser screams something about the former coach (whom Will Ferrel replaces early in the movie) being a woman now, and laughs.  It is not that big of a deal because the guy seemed liked a loser, but not nice anyway.

Kudos! But you don't need to bother seeing it, unless you really like Will Ferrell, like moi.

Brokeback Mountain (2005) - LightShed 9

Brokebackmountain_3 As I am sure you are aware, the movie stars Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal as sheepherders (ok, cowboys) in Wyoming, they fall in love, they get married, but maintain a love affair that stretches through 20 years.  If you have been awake for a few seconds in the past few months, you know what I am talking about.

The movie is excellent and is guaranteed to break your heart, and maybe change your life.  Rather than trying to review it, I will comment on what I believe to be one of the best reviews out there, written by Daniel Mendelsohn for The NY Review of BooksTowleroad has a comprehensive guide to Brokeback, and Wikipedia has a list of awards and nominations.

Brokebackmountainheathjakecloseup

The movie certainly deservers a high LightShed score, and it just does not get the highest score because of its (involuntary or implied?) depiction of gays as cowards (well, the cowboys got married and ultimately can be seen to have lacked the courage to face society and their inner fears – sadly, I have heard that interpretation by more than one moviegoer).  We have, however, to note here that there are brave cowboys mentioned in the movie, but they fell victim of hate crimes, particularly, hate crimes that were shown to Heath Ledger’s character at a young age by his own father, an act which would led him to fear his own sexuality, with devastating consequences.  We all have been there somehow, right?  Name calling at school?  Even if not directed at you, hearing it makes young gay people see early on that being gay is shameful.  The implicit message is, if you can hide it, hide it.  Hide it from yourself if possible.

Brokebackmountainheathjakemichelle

I agree with Daniel Mendelsohn that the movie is decidedly gay, there is no bisexuality in the characters.  Heath and Jake’s characters are gay men, forcefully closeted by a bigoted society:

“Both narratively and visually, Brokeback Mountain is a tragedy about the specifically gay phenomenon of the "closet"—about the disastrous emotional and moral consequences of erotic self-repression and of the social intolerance that first causes and then exacerbates it.”

Brokebackmountainheathjaketruck

Mendelsohn also addresses another very important trait of Brokeback: the so-called universality of the love affair the movie depicts.  People have compared Brokeback to many great, and popular, love affairs (of course we are talking about at least Romeo and Juliet, and Leo and what’s her face in Titanic).  Here are Mendelsohn’s words on the matter, it deserves your undivided attention:

“But those lovers [Romeo and Juliet, etc.], however star-crossed, never despise themselves. As Brokeback makes so eloquently clear, the tragedy of gay lovers like Ennis and Jack is only secondarily a social tragedy. Their tragedy, which starts well before the lovers ever meet, is primarily a psychological tragedy, a tragedy of psyches scarred from the very first stirrings of an erotic desire which the world around them—beginning in earliest childhood, in the bosom of their families, as Ennis's grim flashback is meant to remind us—represents as unhealthy, hateful, and deadly. Romeo and Juliet (and we) may hate the outside world, the Capulets and Montagues, may hate Verona; but because they learn to hate homosexuality so early on, young people with homosexual impulses more often than not grow up hating themselves: they believe that there's something wrong with themselves long before they can understand that there's something wrong with society. This is the truth that Heath Ledger, who plays Ennis, clearly understands—"Fear was instilled in him at an early age, and so the way he loved disgusted him," the actor has said—and that is so brilliantly conveyed by his deservedly acclaimed performance. On screen, Ennis's self-repression and self-loathing are given startling physical form: the awkward, almost hobbled quality of his gait, the constricted gestures, the way in which he barely opens his mouth when he talks all speak eloquently of a man who is tormented simply by being in his own body—by being himself.”

The response to the movie is a great indication that we might be reaching a tipping point and society, hopefully, will be increasingly more accepting of gays at increasing rates (I have even been seeing more and more girls say they think two guys kissing is hot).

Brokebackmountainheathjakekiss

Kudos.  Kudos.  Kudos.  Get out now.  Go see it.  You should really also get all the memorabilia possible, story to screenplay, soundtrack, the works.

UPDATE ON JUNE 22, 2006:  how could I forget?  I saw Anderson Cooper in NY -- I had just seen Brokeback Mountain and I saw him outside the theater.  Maybe he was also watching Brokeback, in the same theater...Isn't that nice?

Capote (2005) - LightShed 9

Capote The movie tells us the story of Philip Seymour-Hoffman's character, Capote, of course, in his incredibly obsessive and original book project.  It involves a gruesome crime.

The fact that Capote was gay is widely known but that was not the point of the movie.  That is great, the movie shows a man just going about his business and revolutionizing story telling, and that man is gay.  Simple.  Philip Seymour Hoffman's partner is played, well, by Bruce Greenwood.

I did not give it the highest score because Capote was selfish, really self-centered (I could not believe how cold he was in that scene with Catherine Keener, when she was all happy her book was going to be big, and he just shrugs it off -- Keener plays Capote's close friend Harper Lee).  Also, there is a scene that suggests an encounter with a hustler.  Not too nice.  Still, the score I give the movie is high.

The acting is truly superb.  Get out now.  Go see it.
