This is one of those movies that makes you feel all grown up and sophisticated when you get it. I don't know if I got it, and I was a little confused/disgusted with the 'punchline,' but I liked it anyway (I think it is film making at its best, it's super fancy, specially the soundtrack
).
The movie continues Lars von Trier's trilogy criticizing American history and politics (I did prefer the first part of the trilogy though, Dogville). In Manderlay, Bryce Dallas Howard replaces Nicole Kidman in the lead role. She does a good job. It is the 30s' and Bryce stops by the US southern town of Manderlay with her gangster daddy, played by Willem Dafoe. She learns there is still slavery in the town. She stays to effectively free the slaves. Make sure you tighten your gut because it will be a punching bag for two and a half hours.
Writer and director Lars von Trier is a multi-talented gay man.
