Not quite as sharp as Tremors, SLiTHER is still an enjoyable comedic horror film that nods to a number of sci-fi and horror classics, most notably John Carpenter’s The Thing, Invasion of the Body Snatchers and Alien. But despite our past film knowledge of invasive alien reproductive methods, one upstanding resident of the sleepy town of Wheelsy still approaches the pulsating, translucent pod in the woods -- and mayhem ensues.
Without giving too much away, the movie features acid-spitting zombies, aggressive and highly-mobile slugs, and a being bent on global domination. And no, the film is not about the G.O.P. taking over the town for a convention. The storyline never leaves you in the dark, and while the film references a number of past horror ideas, the core plot is fascinating, yet not as scary as it could have been.
Elizabeth Banks gives a convincing performance as the wife of the former human-turned-mutant alien, and we’ll be seeing more of her in the upcoming Spider-Man III.
Nathan Fillon of Firefly and Serenity plays the hunky town sheriff who saves the day along with Banks.
There is no gay content in SLiTHER, unless you’re turned on by becoming one with a squid-like alien (amoebasexual?). But that shouldn't keep you from seeing it at a matinee or on Netflix with your honey, as it’s good for a tub of popcorn and a laugh.
